If you want to drive public passenger vehicles, specifically a bus, you must hold a bus authority.
To be guided in applying for your bus driver authority licence and in becoming a fully-fledged bus driver in NSW, here are the criteria you need to fulfil:
- Minimum age to apply is 20
- Valid, unrestricted, and unassigned New South Wales (NSW) driver’s licence
- Unrestricted Australian driver’s licence for at least twelve (12) months in the two (2) years prior to the date of application; and
- Successfully completed a medical examination or evaluation at a level set by the Director-General.
Additional Requirements
Apart from the listed criteria, the following are additional requirements you need to meet:
- Can legally work in Australia
- Familiarity with the relevant sections of the Bus Safety Act and its implementing regulations
- Meets all other requirements for operating the vehicle
- Maturity to operate the vehicle safely and legally
An approved medical exam is a must for getting your Bus Driver Authority License. A police record check and a driving record review will also be conducted.
You must also prove to Transport for NSW that you are of good character and otherwise qualify to operate a public passenger vehicle. You must also prove that you are responsible and skilled enough to operate a public passenger vehicle in line with all applicable regulations and norms.
Submitting Your Bus Driver Authority License Application
Transport for NSW will check your driving record and criminal background after receiving all your documentation (excluding the Evidence of Training Certificates for bus drivers).
Similarly, information about your driving record in other Australian jurisdictions may be requested. This data, together with the data you provided on the application and the health assessment form, will be evaluated to determine whether you are qualified to hold the position for which you have applied.
Assessment Process
Bus driver authorisations are often issued within four to six weeks after application receipt to candidates who include an Evidence of Training Certificate with their initial application. On the other hand, bus driver authority applicants who do not submit an Evidence of Training Certificate will typically receive a letter outlining the evaluation results four to six weeks after the application.
Once an application for a bus authority has been approved, the applicant must submit an Evidence of Training Certificate to Transport for NSW. Driver authorisations are typically issued within two weeks after this is submitted.
